Seen through the eyes of children at some of Colombia’s most violent regions, I Don't Know Why They Call Us Children is a documentary film that examines first hand the devastating effects of war on children and aims to create awareness among young people and adults alike and inspire global action in support of human rights.
The issue of children’s participation in armed political conflict has captured the attention of the world during the past ten to fifteen years. Children have been present in some capacity on almost every battlefield in every era. Today more than 300,000 child soldiers, boys and girls, are serving as armed hostile combatants in insurgencies, civil wars, and other conflicts on nearly every continent. Some children are coerced into fighting; others are pushed into it by poverty and crises in their communities; some may be seduced by promises of glory or excitement. Yet, children’s own voices and perspectives have been largely absent from the literature and adopted public policies on war-affected children, especially in the context of Colombia.By engaging these issues through the lens of artistic methods such as filming and photography workshops, this project seeks to break from a tendency to interpret children’s lives within the languages and scripts used to understand adults and reflect children's stories from their own perspectives, giving them a voice and a chance to be heard by the international community.
