FOSTERING COMMUNITIES THROUGH YOUTH EMPOWERMENT

United women, stronger communities - yoga and zumba classes in Cazucá

Theodora StankovaComment

Last month Nukanti resumed the free yoga and dance classes in the community centre in Cazucá, on the outskirts of Bogotá. The classes have had big success among women in the community as they offer them an accessible sport activity to help overcome stress in their everyday lives.

The classes are held every Friday between 10 a.m. and 12 m. in Nukanti´s community centre in the neighbourhood of Altos del pino, Cazucá. The group currently consists of about 10 women and girls from the community who learn about yoga and zumba under the tutoring of our volunteer Theodora Stankova. The classes start with a one-hour yoga activity during which the participants practice the basic asanas, respiration and relaxation. Afterwards we take a short break to relax and feel the effect of the practice, and to have a discussion in the group about how everyone felt, what they liked the most and what can be improved. The classes finish with an intensive 30-minute zumba activity which combines aerobics with dance steps and movements from salsa, merengue, cumbia, reggaeton.

The group will have its first performance on Sept 20th when Nukanti and Proyecto Escape will hold a celebration of International Peace Day, in support of the international campaign Peace One Day.

Through these classes especially targeted at women Nukanti helps build stronger bonds in the female community in Altos del pino and provides women with a safe space where they can spend quality time with their children. After establishing a strong group of women we plan to expand the offering with events and activities on topics such as women empowerment, gender-based violence, leadership skills, etc. We believe that empowering women translates into stronger families and stronger communities, and is therefore an important complement to our work with children and youth.
