English-teaching program in 12 municipalities in Risaralda, Colombia
In 2013 Nukanti Colombia won a contract from the local government of the Risaralda department to carry out a two-year English-teaching program in 12 municipalities in the region, from December 2013 until November 2015. Under the program Nukanti recruits and places a total of 24 native speakers to teach English in schools in the municipalities of Apia, Balboa, Belén de Umbría, Guática, La Celia, La Virginia, Marsella, Mistrató, Pueblo Rico, Qunchía, Santa Rosa and Santuario.
The objective of the program is to provide opportunities for cultural and language exchange to the communities (mainly students, teachers and directors at the local schools) with native English speakers, thereby improving their communication skills in the foreign language. So far in the different phases of the program we have hosted more than 100 volunteers from the USA, Canada, the UK, Ireland, Australia and New Zealand. All of them get their food and accommodation covered with local families, as well as local transportation costs.
The volunteers support the formal educational system in the communities by accompanying English teachers in developing lesson plans and carrying out the classes at school. They can also organize different after-school activities with English for the children and the other members of the community, like for example conversational clubs, theatre groups, walks, etc. At the same time the volunteers get a unique chance submerge into the authentic culture of a Colombian village in the beautiful coffee region, get to know the local people and nature, and have a life-changing experience to remember.
